Week 23 and Purple Legs Update

Well, we just had our week 23 appointment, and while there are no ultrasound pictures, it was nice to hear Kaylee's heartbeat again.  She was at 160 today, which is up from her heartbeat in the earlier months of around 153.  I figure it is because she's a growing girl and needs a stronger heartbeat to accommodate that.

The doctor also got to look at our birth plan today, which was met with optimism.  I really do like the new doctor.  He seems to be very laid back with everything, which is good for a person who likes to have control like I do.  I can't help it, though...I've done the research, and I know what I want.  All that stand between me and it is my pain tolerance, HA!

The doctor also agreed to give me two more ultrasounds over the course of the rest of the pregnancy.  One at 28 weeks and one at 36 weeks.  So I was relieved.  Apparently his office only does it for their more high risk patients, but I think I convinced him with my neurosis that it was necessary.  ;)

Finally, purple legs are gone, and we think we have an answer....blueberries.  Yep.  I don't think my body was able to process the pigment in the blueberries while pregnant, so it gathered in my legs.  My husband and I came to this conclusion in several very awkward ways.  My toilet seat had turned blue.  And only blue where my legs were...a perfect silhouette on the pristine white toilet seat.  Then after that, we noticed that my side of our cream colored sheets no longer matched his side.  I guess I was secreting blueberry pigment.  But what really tipped us off in addition to those things was the fact that we went on a trip recently where I didn't have blueberries to eat for breakfast.  By the time we returned, my legs were back to normal coloring.  All three clues put together, and viola!  Blueberry legs.

Purple Legs, Another Ultrasound, and 3D pictures

Let it be known that I am the first lady ever to have purple legs during her pregnancy.  At least that's what I'm gathering judging by the doctors' responses.  It started a few months ago when my knees went purple.  I had heard of some women getting a little purple in a few "areas", but as of yesterday, both of my legs from my hip bone to my ankles have turned purple!  So I decided it was time to call in the new doctor for an opinion.  Both his opinion and the other doctor in the practice's opinion was "Never seen or heard of it before."  How comforting!

The good news was that to be on the safe side they wanted to do an ultrasound of Kaylee to make sure she was okay.  I'm always happy when I get to see my little girl and what was even better was there ultrasound machine was top notch compared to my other doctor's.  We got 3D ultrasound pictures of her face and regular ultrasound pictures of all of her other body parts!  The 3D pictures are hilarious, though, because she wouldn't move her hands away from her face, and she kept moving around in general.  So while not the best, here they are:

And of course, the last picture is confirming once again without a doubt she is a girl.  ;)

After the ultrasound came back normal, and they told me Kaylee had already grown 2 more ounces since last week (that's my girl!), they sent me to another hospital to have an ultrasound of my legs done.  This would determine if there were any blood clots or if my legs didn't have a strong pulse going through them.  Everything looked fine to the technician.  So unless my bloodwork comes back with something different, it appears that I just have purple tinted legs while pregnant, which I'm okay with.  There are worse things to have during pregnancy I'm sure.

.......okay okay, I won't leave you hanging.  I know everyone wants to see the purple legs.  Here's my right leg with my arm next to it for a comparison....yeeeeeeeah.

Week 20

Guess what I felt last night?!  A KICK!  Finally!  I had some weird feelings in my lower abdomen, so I decided to put my hand on my stomach to see if I could feel anything better.  As soon as I did, she hauled off and kicked my hand!  Now that's a smart girl.  :)

Here is my Week 20 pic:

My mom says I definitely look pregnant now, especially since my stomach now surpasses my "girls", ha! And I'm starting to feel more pregnant for sure.  It's mostly the weight in my abdomen, though, and the increased appetite.  I have gained another 2lbs, so while I'm still not at the requisite 10 lb gain for 20 weeks, I'm closer.

Besides Kaylee moving and growing, everything else is pretty much the same.  I'm grateful that so far this has been a relatively easy pregnancy.

The Baby Registries

This last weekend was super busy.  I went ahead and registered at all three places I had planned on: Amazon, Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby.  I put the links to the registries to the right of the blog for easy access.

It was a hard decision deciding where to register.  I'm a renown researcher in my family...before anyone buys anything they usually ask me to check on the reviews, prices, etc.  So I used my skills to research practically every baby product out there haha!  The hard part came when almost everything I  need for Kaylee ended up being on Amazon and not located anywhere else.  I know a lot of people fear online shopping and want to do theirs locally.  So what I ended up doing is taking what I could from the Amazon registry that was available at Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby and registering for those items at the stores.....unfortunately it only amounted to about fifty items at each store.  Needless to say the majority of the stuff is on Amazon.

The main reason for this is hubby and I are doing a lot of different things with Kaylee that many other people don't do.  For example, we plan on cloth diapering Kaylee.  No local stores carry the abundance of cloth diapering supplies that I need to have for two years, but Amazon does.  We are also following a minimalist design for the nursery (i.e.- practically no furniture but some wall decorations), and most of the decorations are only found on Amazon.  I plan on addressing these decisions in a future post, but these are some of the reasons for the Amazon registry.  The others are they beat everyone elses prices and over free shipping on anything over $25....you can't beat that.  :)

It's a.....GIRL!

We are happy to announce that we are having a beautiful baby girl in September!

We are naming her Kaylee Virginia....the middle name,Virginia, is after my late Grandma and my husband's living grandmother.

The doctor said she is doing very well and is clocking in at .7lbs, which is right on track for 19 weeks 3 days.  We got to see her arms, legs, spine, heart, kidneys, and, ahem, private areas, which indicate completely that she is a girl.  The doctor also informed me that all of my bloodwork came back perfect.  I am at the lowest risk for downs syndrome and other illnesses they test for.  Lots to be grateful for today!

Unfortunately, my doctor also informed me that he is retiring immediately from obstetrics and will not be seeing me any longer.  So I am going to have to switch doctors in the middle of my pregnancy, which I am a bit anxious about.  However, he assured me that he recommended a good doctor that happens to be much closer to me than where I currently have to go.  We will meet him on the next appointment.

So definitely a very exciting day with mostly good news.  We are ecstatic because we had hoped to have a little girl first, and I can hardly wait to start buying pretty dresses for her!
